LOS ANGELES (AP) – Whitney Houston, who ruled as pop music’s queen until her majestic voice and regal image were ravaged by drug use, erratic behavior and a tumultuous marriage to singer Bobby Brown, has died. She was 48.
Houston’s publicist, Kristen Foster, said Saturday that the singer had died, but the cause and the location of her death were unknown.
Legendary pop singer Whitney Houston was found dead Saturday at a Beverly Hills, California, hotel, officials said.
The entertainer, whose incredible talent was discovered at an early age, was pronounced dead at 3:55 p.m. (6:55 p.m. ET) at the Beverly Hilton hotel despite resuscitation efforts, a police spokesman said.
Beverly Hills Police Lt. Mark Rosen said there were “no obvious signs of criminal intent” and that the cause of her death is being investigated.
Houston’s bodyguard found her body, said Courtney Barnes, publicist for hip-hop artist Ray J, who was dating the pop diva.
According to her official website, Houston sold more than 170 million albums, singles and videos. But she also struggled with addiction problems over the years.
Houston, whose hits included “The Greatest Love of All,” died on the eve of the 54th annual Grammy Awards at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
When it comes to female vocalists that I admire the most, Whitney Houston is one of those favorites. Her music, style and vocal range has influenced and insprired me for as long as I can remember. There are so many few female artists in this world that has a range as spectactular as hers. Its still an udder shock that she's gone; it really hasn't hit me yet. But I miss her already and will always admire her talent. Rest in peace Whitney.
